Unfortunately, the drug\u2019s manufacturer, Gilead Sciences, Inc., chose profits over public safety and withheld a drug that did not have the potentially dangerous side effects of Truvada.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, the company is facing serious liability for its actions through lawsuits filed by former users of Truvada who have developed serious health conditions. PrEP is the use of medicines to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/hiv\/basics\/prep.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">help prevent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> someone from contracting HIV. According to tests and trials, PrEP is approximately <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/hiv\/basics\/prep\/prep-effectiveness.html#:~:text=PrEP%20reduces%20the%20risk%20of,74%25%20when%20taken%20as%20prescribed.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">99% effective<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in preventing the transmission of HIV through sex and around <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/hiv\/basics\/prep\/prep-effectiveness.html#:~:text=PrEP%20reduces%20the%20risk%20of,74%25%20when%20taken%20as%20prescribed.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">74% effective<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> against the condition\u2019s transmission through injection drug use.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With efficacy rates so high, it is no wonder that Truvada has become a widely used medication for the prevention of HIV. And just like any other medication, Truvada has a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/drugs\/2\/drug-91482\/truvada-oral\/details#:~:text=Diarrhea%2C%20headache%2C%20dizziness%2C%20trouble,your%20doctor%20or%20pharmacist%20promptly.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">variety of side effects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dizziness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Headaches<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Backaches<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sleeping problems<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fatigue and exhaustion<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diarrhea<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In most cases, these and other common side effects of Truvada are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicalnewstoday.com\/articles\/drugs-truvada-side-effects#mild-side-effects\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mild and last only days or weeks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. However, more dangerous side effects have come to light since the drug\u2019s introduction to consumers, most notably bone loss and kidney issues.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Failure_to_Warn\"><\/span><b>Failure to Warn<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All companies that make products for consumers, including medicines, must warn consumers of potential dangers and side effects caused by said products.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gilead Sciences <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bencrump.com\/truvada-lawsuit-lawyer\/did-gilead-fail-to-warn-users-about-the-serious-risks-of-truvada\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">did warn users<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the potential side effects of Truvada. However, the company did not completely fulfill its duty to warn. The lawsuits against the company allege that Gilead Sciences actively misrepresented the more dangerous risks posed by Truvada and failed to make them known to consumers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Specifically, the lawsuits allege that Gilead Sciences not only knew of the danger posed by tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF), the active ingredient in Truvada, but it also withheld the release of a safer alternative known as tenofovir alafenamide (TAF).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the lawsuits, the company took these actions in order to fully reap the profits from the more dangerous TDF before taking it out of circulation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These actions by Gilead Sciences are direct violations of the company\u2019s duty of care that it owes to consumers, a duty that requires all companies to diligently maintain high safety standards.
