Life-Threatening Bacteria Found in Fabuloso

On February 8, 2023, Fabuloso voluntarily recalled their Multi-Purpose Cleaners due to the products containing the life-threatening bacteria species Pseudomonas. Those affected before the recall  from Fabuloso manufacturer, Colgate-Palmolive, occurred are now taking legal action against Fabuloso for the brand’s negligence and putting consumers at risk.

The problem began when Colgate-Palmolive claimed that unregulated and unintentionally high amounts of a preservative were added to the product, causing dangerous bacteria to grow.

About Pseudomonas Bacteria

Pseudomonas aeruginosa, the most common type of Pseudomonas that causes infections in humans, poses life-threatening risks to those who are infected from it.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections can manifest into immensely serious conditions considering that the bacteria can infect any part of the body. The most common and life-threatening areas of the body it can affect include: blood, lungs, stomach, urinary tract, or tendons.

The opportunistic bacteria can cause a variety of diseases, one of which includes ventilator-associated pneumonia. Other illnesses and negative health effects that Pseudomonas can cause include:

  • Urinary tract infections
  • Severe coughing and congestion
  • Joint pain and swelling
  • Prolonged neck or back pain
  • Headaches
  • Diarrhea
  • Rashes with pus filled pimples
  • Painful ears and ear discharge

Both the World Health Organization and the CDC have noted Pseudomonas aeruginosa as a severe threat to the human body that needs to be evaluated so it can be better managed and treated. This type of bacteria is one of the few alarming bacterias that are antibiotic resistant, making treatment of infections that it causes extremely difficult or impossible.

Not only was Pseudomonas aeruginosa discovered in the contaminated Fabuloso products, but also the Pseudomonas species Pseudomonas fluorescens. While this type is not viewed as much of a hazard as P. aeruginosa, it still has been linked time and time again to respiratory infections

The main generalized cause for concern with an outbreak of P. fluorescens is in its ability to grow at just 4 degrees Celsius. Given this ability to grow in this condition, it has been found to survive in blood products which can in turn lead to transfusion-related outbreaks.

Fabuloso Cleaner Health Concerns

The recall for Fabuloso products cited that only those with weakened immune systems, external medical devices, or underlying lung conditions were susceptible to the bacteria in Fabuloso causing major infections. Those with healthy immune systems are said to be not at a high risk of being affected.
